The seminar was supported and sponsored by major railway industries in the Netherlands (Nederlandse Spoorwegen/NS, Pro Rail, Strukton, VRS Railway Industry, Alstom and Strukton). Experts and representatives from major railway industries in Indonesia and the Netherlands attended the seminar. Presenters from Indonesia are Toni Surakusumah (PT LEN Railway System), Prof. Danang Parikesit (Chairman of Masyarakat Transportasi Indonesia), Prof. Ahmad Munawar (Gadjah Mada University) and Mega Tarigan (PT MRT Jakarta).

In his welcoming remarks, Charge d’Affaires/Deputy Chielf of Mission of the Embassy, Ibnu Wahyutomo, stressed among others the significance of spurring development in the field of transportation in order to support sustainable economic growth in Indonesia. This is in line with the one of the focuses of President Joko Widodo’s administration in infrastructure development. He added that Indonesia targets additional railway lines from 5,500 km to 16,500 km in 2019 to support the mobility of passengers and logistics.

A number of issues were discussed in the seminar such as railway in Indonesia and the Netherlands, development of rail based urban transport in Indonesia, and the state of rail industry in the Netherlands. The results of the seminar will be put on the table during the 3rd Infrastructure Forum between Indonesia and the Netherlands to be held in the Netherlands in March 2015

This year the Netherlands railway celebrated its 175th anniversary while Indonesian railway celebrated its 150th anniversary of its establishment. The theme “connecting history to the future” was chosen for the long history of railway relations shared by the two countries. The seminar is expected to serve as a new milestone in further strengthening the shared historical relations in a form of a more robust cooperation in the future.
